FEDERAL
Next Australian Federal Election On or before 30 November 2013	The earliest possible date for a joint House/Senate election is Saturday, 3 August 2013. The earliest possible date for a House of Representatives election is any Saturday, 33 days after dissolution of House. The earliest possible date for a Senate election is Saturday, 3 August 2013. The latest possible date for a joint House/Senate election is Saturday, 30 November 2013. The latest possible date for a House of Representatives election is Saturday, 30 November 2013. The latest possible date for a Senate election is Saturday, 24 May 2014. The Constitution (section 13) requires the election to be completed by 30 June each third year. Following polling day, the Australian Electoral Commission needs five weeks to allow for the receipt of postal votes; then distribution of preferences; followed by return of Writs.
STATE
Australian Capital Territory	Fixed Date: 20 October 2012 unless this conflicts with a Federal election in which case it would be held on the first Saturday of December i.e. 1 December, 2012. If an extraordinary election has been held in the 6 months before the day the ordinary election is scheduled for, the ordinary election is not held.
New South Wales	Fixed Date: 26 March 2011
Northern Territory	The current situation re the next Northern Territory parliamentary elections is as follows: Any time after three years from the first sitting date (9 September 2008) of the Assembly after the previous election and before four years after the same date. The earliest it can be held is 1 October 2011 and the latest is 8 September 2012. Note, however, that an Electoral Act Amendment bill was tabled in the parliament 26 November 2008 and debated 11 February 2009 relating to fixed term elections, commencing at the next general elections. The Bill was read for a third time on that date but has not yet received assent.
Queensland	The Queensland election can be called anytime. The writ is usually, but not always announced on a Tuesday. The Government of the day determines the period for the election which ranges from a minimum 26 days to a maximum of 56 days. The last possible date for the next Queensland State General Election will be Saturday 16 June 2012.
South Australia	Fixed Date: 15 March 2014
Tasmania	A The Tasmanian 'state' election only involves the Tasmanian lower house, the House of Assembly. There is no fixed date or minimum period before a 'state' election is called. The latest date for the next House of Assembly elections is 24 May 2014
Victoria	Fixed Date: Saturday 27 November 2010
Western Australia	The next WA State election can be held between June 2012 and May 2013.
